How do flowers absorb water?
There are tiny water vessels on the flower stem, which the flower uses to drink up the water and nutrients it needs to survive. Scissors damage these whereas a sharp knife is less likely to.
Why is it better to use a sharp knife rather than scissors when cutting stems?
Damaging the end of a stem by cutting it roughly with a blunt object leads to infection of the water and subsequently results in bacteria blocking the wood vessels in the stem. Damaging or bruising the stem will also cause the flower unnecessary stress which will consequently shorten its vase life. By using a sharp knife you dramatically reduce the damage to the water vessels, enabling the flower to easily absorb plenty of food and water. Cutting at an angle will stop the stem resting on the bottom of the vase and sealing itself.
